Beliefs around Birth
Women who choose to become doulas often do so for a variety of reasons. Some have grown up in an environment that has promoted birth as a beautiful and wonderful process. Others have suffered birth trauma and have found healing through learning to support and empower others. Some women had such a wonderful birth experience themselves that they can’t wait to share that excitement with others. Still others are committed to increasing natural birth and know that a doula helps to promote that.
It’s important when considering becoming a doula to discover what your beliefs around birth are. It’s important to work out your own fears, thoughts, emotions and beliefs before starting a career that works with the sacred event of birth. Each birth is special and unique. It may take place at home, in a hospital, with a doctor or midwife. It may be vaginal or a caesarean section. There is no right or wrong belief. They are as unique to you as they will be to your clients.
